Merrillchip announced the introduction of the NanoSat-450A portable Ka-band satellite communication terminal on September 20, 2026, adding a new portable communications system for emergency response, field operations and remote-area applications.The NanoSat-450A is intended for locations where terrestrial communications networks are unavailable, damaged or unstable. The system combines satellite communication, 5G network aggregation and an integrated 4G/5G base station in a single portable platform.
According to the company’s specifications, the antenna and battery weigh less than 10 kilograms, while the complete system weighs less than 13 kilograms. The equipment can be transported in an IATA-compliant aviation case or backpack-style carrying bag. The terminal uses a one-button Q-touch operation for automatic satellite acquisition, with satellite alignment specified at within two minutes under defined operating conditions.
The system supports one satellite link and two 5G links, with aggregated uplink and downlink bandwidth of up to 300 Mbps. When compatible 5G networks are available, terrestrial connections can be combined with the satellite connection. When terrestrial infrastructure is unavailable, the satellite link can provide an alternative communications path.
An integrated 4G/5G base station can provide local mobile network access for personnel and connected devices at a deployment site, depending on network configuration and service conditions.
The terminal integrates a satellite modem, network router, aggregation gateway, rechargeable battery and BeiDou positioning. Its built-in 150Wh battery is specified to provide at least three hours of operation under defined conditions. External power can be supplied through a 100–240V AC adapter.
Network interfaces include Gigabit Ethernet, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and 5.8GHz Wi-Fi. Supported protocols include UDP, TCP, SRT, RTMP, RTSP, RTP, HTTP, HTTPS and FTP. These interfaces support applications such as live video transmission, remote data transfer and temporary field networking.
The NanoSat-450A has an IP66 protection rating and an operating temperature range of -25°C to +55°C. Merrillchip identifies disaster communications, news gathering and broadcasting, police and fire command, telecommunications emergency support, oil and gas operations, power and water infrastructure, forestry and transportation as potential application areas.
The introduction of the NanoSat-450A marks Merrillchip’s addition of a portable satellite communication system combining satellite connectivity, terrestrial network aggregation and local mobile network functions in one transportable configuration.
