CORTONA, Italy — Author Uri J. Nachimson announces the publication of his new historical novel, Red Leather Shoes, a disturbing exploration of power, morality, and the transformation of an ordinary human being into a figure capable of extraordinary cruelty.Inspired by the life of Maria Mandl, one of the most feared female guards in the Nazi concentration camp system, the novel follows Maria from her childhood in a small Austrian village through Lichtenburg and Ravensbrück, and eventually to Auschwitz-Birkenau.
As a child, Maria grows up in a conservative Catholic household. Her father is a shoemaker, and music is one of the great pleasures of her youth. She is especially moved by the sound of the church organ and dreams of beauty, music, and an ordinary future.
Yet the woman who eventually emerges is radically different from the young girl she once was.
At the center of Red Leather Shoes is a haunting question: how can an apparently ordinary person gradually release the darkest part of human nature and become capable of terrible acts?
Music remains woven throughout the story, creating a disturbing contrast between beauty and brutality. The recurring image of a pair of red leather shoes becomes a symbolic thread connecting innocence, memory, and the victims whose lives disappeared behind the gates of the camps.
The novel is a work of historical fiction inspired by real events and historical figures. It combines documented historical settings with fictionalized scenes, dialogue, and personal relationships in order to examine the psychology of power and moral collapse.
Uri J. Nachimson is a Polish-Italian author of numerous historical novels dealing with Jewish history, the Holocaust, Italy, Poland, memory, identity, and human relationships. Several of his works have been published in multiple languages. His books The Polish Patriot and Lilly’s Album are held by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Library in Washington, D.C.
